FIRST WOMEN TO SERVE ON SCU BOARD OF REGENTS

The student and alumni newsletter of what was then Southwestern College of Christian Ministries, The Insight, announced new board members in 1983. The Rev. C.E. Means, Board Chair, noted, "In expanding its Board of Education to bring the board back up to its full strength, the Southwestern Board of Education is gearing up for growth." By bringing the board up to strength he was referring to the restructuring that had moved the institution from a large junior college with a four year religion degree to a much smaller Bible college profile with a new name. "We believe, the college will see good progress in the next few years, and a strong Board of Education is essential to that progress."

Among the new faces being welcomed were two who were making history for the school. Two women, Lynn Pate, and Alfreda Flowers, were for the first time part of this decision making body. Although Means claimed they were the first such women to old office on any IPHC boards of education, further research will have to verify that statement.

Others added to the Board of Education in 1983 included: Leon Crosswhite (alumnus of clas of '46 and a local businessman); Pete Thompson (a businessman in oil production from Ardmore,OK); david Oxley (alumnus and insurance executive); David Roberts (Business manager, Norman Vo-Tech Schools); SamVaughn (insurance executive); Jim Eby (Alumnus and pastor); Dennis Cox (pastor); James Zenger (pastor); Kenneth Cain (alumnus and pastor).

Bonnie, along with her husband the late Dan Sheaffer, were graduates of Southwestern College in Oklahoma City. She was a talented musician, an ordained minister, a business woman, and a loving and supportive woman.

She and her husband had lead Crossroads Church (one of the first mega churches in the Assemblies of God), for more than two decades, hosted a program on the local TBN, and recorded music.

In November 2005, library professional Marilyn A. Hudson, who had earned degrees in History and Library and Information Studies from the University of Oklahoma (Norman,OK). She had previously served as library specialist in reference, outreach, family, and youth services with the Metropolitan Library System (OK City and County) and as a certified Library Media Specialist with Norman Public Schools. In 2003, she was awarded the "Outstanding New Librarian Award" by the Oklahoma Library Association.

In 2006 she facilitated a history committee and wrote a large part of the first institutional history, One Nightclub and a Mule Barn (Tate, 2006). As copyright holder, she designated all royalties to go to the development of the university.

After attending SCCM, the post of librarian fell vacant, and as the school transitioned into its new designation as a "University", Michael Lowder was chosen to take up the reins. A minister, Mr. Lowder made the trip to London to select the materials from the collection of Noel Brooks and the Bristol Bible College to bring to the library. He assisted in the 2003 Institutional Self-Study required by the accrediting agency. He received his Master's from the University of Oklahoma.

In the mid-1980's a combination administration and library was built on the Bethany campus of SCCM. Due to the careful transfer of resources from the now defunct 10th street campus library, the schoo, despite its small size, enjoyed an outstanding collection of quality materials supporting religion, philosophy, and Biblical studies.

In the 1970's, in response to explosive growth and additional academic programs, a wing was added to the library, The Irvin Learning Center, including classrooms, instructional and library collections and space, and special technology spaces. In the 1980s', the Springer Learning Center was opened. The term "learning center" was very trendy in the 1960's and 1970's as new formats (recordings, tapes, and film) began to emerge. The custom was to separate information sources by their formats and book based libraries did not always know what to do and the lure of the technological aura of a "learning center" utilizing the newest electronics and tools was hard to turn down.

Artist and educator, Patsy Rutherford followed Glenn Pearl and oversaw the move into the new building. She was a business woman who had run her own antique business before coming to SCCM. A creative and warm person she helped to add a welcoming and spiritual atmosphere to the world of campus learning by adding art and plants and a 'Pause to Pray' cross each Easter season. She took an additional degree while at the college from the University of Central Oklahoma.

Moved first into the smaller Roberson Building, the library of SCCM soon outgrew its space, and by the mid-1980's a combination administration and library building was built. Human chains were used to transfer the books from the old building into the new one. Along the way, a little fun....

Well known as a leader in Christian Education, a professor at Oklahoma City Southwestern College in the 1960-1970's, and an innovative leader and educator, Dr. James Taylor passed away Friday November 19, 2010 in Oklahoma City.

James Edward Taylor, PH.D., was born July 21, 1933 in Austinville, Virginia, and graduated to his heavenly home November 19, 2010, in Oklahoma City. He was the son of C.R. Taylor, Sr. and Annie Hazel Fisher Taylor, and was one of their ten children. He met his bride, Mary Bly McMillion, while holding a tent revival in her home town in 1954, and they enjoyed 52 years of marriage. He was preceded in death by his father and five siblings. He is survived by his mother; his wife, Mary; and his four children: J. Mark and Virginia Taylor, of Edmond, OK; Melody and Todd Smith, of Bedford, VA; Michael and Melodie Taylor, of Georgetown, SC; and Marty and Kari Taylor, of Orlando, FL; and seven grandchildren, whom he adored: Chance, Daniel, Graham, Abigail and Molly Bly Taylor; and Caleb and Luke Smith. He is also survived by two sisters, two brothers and their families. James was a consummate "seeker of truth," and as such, he pursued and earned several degrees, including an Associate degree from Emmanuel College; a Bachelor of Divinity from Asbury College, a Master of Theology from Asbury Theological Seminary, a Master of Education from the University of Pittsburgh, a Specialist in Christian Education from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary, and a Ph.D. in Administration from Golden State University. He also completed doctoral studies at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School in Elgin, IL. In his early years, he served as a pastor in churches in Virginia and Pennsylvania, and as President of Ambassador Bible Institute in London, OH. For over two decades, he was a leader in the field of Christian Education in Oklahoma. He served as the founding chairman of the Christian Education Department at Southwestern Christian University, and enjoyed a long tenure as the President of the Oklahoma Christian Education Association. "The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord: and he delighteth in his way." Psalm 37:23

Viewing will be from 9:00 a.m. - 9:00 p.m. on Monday at Mercer-Adams, with family present from 6:00-8:00 p.m. A celebration of his life will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, November 23, 2010, at River of Life Church, 6901 N.W. 150th Street, in Oklahoma City. Burial will follow in Wytheville, VA.

Chrismon Service - A Long Time SCU tradition

This image is dated circa 1990. This tradition has been a high point of SCU since it the school began it in the mid 198o's under the leadership of Mrs. Iaquinta. For years alums have returned to participate in this special time of rejoicing and worship in the sacred season. Some have even brought back children and grandchildren to enjoy this event.

The History of the Chrismon ® service at SCU, 1985 -Present

In 1985, a new faculty member, Charlotte Iaquinta, sought to enrich the meaning of the holiday season for her students at Southwestern in Bethany, Oklahoma.

In this special service the historic and traditional symbols of the faith (the Chi-Rho and many others) were part of a lovely and reflective liturgy, inspiring music, and personal creative effort, all combined to make an impact in the lives of staff, faculty, and students. A tradition was born.

Every year since then, SCU students have taken the challenge to create an ornament of deep personal significance to them. These creations are deeply personal, significant and faith based objects that create a memory. It became such a vital memory Alums come back each year to add their special item to the tree once more, some even bringing their children to participate. They gladly share tales of how they have shared the custom in their families and churches. With moving words they share how it has enriched their family and their church each holiday season.

Over the years, graduates in many disciplines requested copies of the service to use in their own homes and church settings.

The concept of using symbols to convey meaning dates to the early days of the Christian church and the term ‘chrismon’ is based on the ‘Christ Monogram’ from those ancient days.

“Chrismons”™ is a trademark of the Ascension Lutheran Church in Danville, Virginia. In the United States the Ascension Lutheran Church holds a copyright/trademark on the use of the word “Chrismons.” ™ It was created by Mrs. Frances Spencer, who originated the concept and brought it to reality in that church in 1957. The Ascension Church has specific limitations as to use: no Chrismon ™ is to ever be sold or bought but must be hand crafted, colors used must be white and gold. Douglas Rayford Corvin passed away unexpectedly November 5, 2010. Southwestern Christian University is deeply saddened by the loss of a dear friend and son of W.R. Corvin, former SCU president. Doug graduated from Southwestern High School in 1968 and then attended Oklahoma City Southwestern College from the Summer of 1968 to the Spring of 1970.

He was born March 3, 1950 in Beloit, WI to William Rayford and Geneva Leenora Corvin. He was a loving husband, son, father, poppie, and great-grampie, brother, and uncle, cousin and friend. He was dearly loved and will be deeply missed by all who knew him. He is survived by his wife, Nancy; father, W.R. Corvin; his daughter and son-in-law, Melodye and Evan Klassen, and children; daughter and son-in-law, Chaney and Mark Satterfield, and children; his sisters, Nita Tryman and Geralon Ore, and their families; his stepchildren, Shele Hobza and David Simpson, and their families. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, November 9, 2010, at 10:30 a.m., at Eagle's Crest Fellowship, 5956 N.W. 23rd Street, Oklahoma City, OK. The service will be led by longtime friend, Rev. 1945 Board of Education Report Setting the Stage for SCU

In the 1945 PHC Yearbook (pg. 43) is this report of the Education Committee calling for 1) an accredited 4 year college and an accredited Theological Seminay and 2) that a correspondence course be developed for those seeking training as workers (assumed to mean church workers) shall be provided AND ministerial training institutes shall be conducted throughout the church. Did SCU fulfill that early mandate? It received approvals for granting 4 year religious studies degrees, then 2 year general studies and then four year degrees. In 1995 it received permission to grant a Master of Ministry degree. In the early 1950's R.O. Corvin developed a correspondence program for those people wishing training but unable to come to SCU.

In 1895, Kingfisher College was chartered in Kinfisher, Oklahoma by the Association of Congregational Churches in Oklahoma. In 1927 the property was acquired by the Pentecostal Holiness Church, under the direction of the East Oklahoma Conference. The PHC had been operating a "King's College" in Checotah from 19125-1927.

The location of the King's College in 1928-29 was described in the college bulletin as : "...located on the Rock Island Railroad, 43 miles south of Enid, Oklahoma and about 50 miles northeast of Oklahoma City, and one mile east of the Post Office in Kingfisher, Oklahoma."

"Kingfisher," the catalog assured, " was not large enough to have many of the sinful things that are found in big cities...It is one of the best cities morally and otherwise that can be found in the Central West." This was very important thing for a group that had emerged from the national Holiness Movement of the 19th century.

The school was seeking accreditation at that time under the leadership of President Thomas Lee Aaron (A.B., B.D.).

The scope of the curriculum in 1928-29 was primary from grades kindergarten through eighth, a regular four-year high school, and their was emphasis on "Business Courses", "Musical Department", and a "Theological Department."

Kingfisher College is a direct ancestor to the present Southwestern Christian University, and leadership, such as Aaron and C.H. Williams were instrumental in the formation of the later SCU in 1946.
